I started playing around the age of 11 with the encouragement of my father who was a member of the Bridgend Band (South Wales). I used to go to the bandmasters house straight from school for private lessons.
I joined the Pencoed Silver Band 1950 playing a cornet but eventually moved on to the Tenor Horn. I stayed with them until 1962 when I moved from Wales to England on marriage.
In 1964 I joined a band in Manchester (cannot remember the name) but I remember taking part in one Whit Walk. I left in 1965 when I moved to Shropshire.
I joined the Dawley New Town Band which was eventually renamed The Telford Brass Band around 1968 as Solo Horn Stayed with them for a number of years before retiring from playing.
In 2000 I saw an advert for a Baritone player for the Dunchurch Band, joined and am still happily playing with them.
In 2003 I competed in the National Finals in Dundee with Daventry Brass.
Can’t really tie any down as whilst younger I enjoyed everything from concerts to competing.
My least favourite was marching and playing in the welsh valleys for Remembrance Sunday. Seemed always to be raining and stamina was required to conquer the slopes morning and afternoon and then finish the day with an evening concert in the local club.
