Time to reveal a forty year secret that nobody in the world knows: Jealousy! When I was 11 my mum and dad bought my sister Sarah (aged 9) a clarinet, there was no way she was having something without me having something so I went to school, came back and told my dad I wanted to play the trumpet. Sarah stopped playing the clarinet after a few years, played the tenor horn and packed in playing any instrument in her early teens, forty years later here I am still going on!!!!!!!
I changed to cornet aged 12 and joined Bedworth Band on 3rd cornet, my first contest was in the Championship section with Vilem Tausky’s Concert Overture, I have played Euphonium, Eb Bass, Bb Bass, Baritone, Tenor Trombone, Bass Trombone and percussion, played with the City Of Coventry B Band, Coventry School Of Music Band, moved to London and played with Hillingdon Band before moving back to the midlands, joined Rolls Royce and spent 18 years at Bilton band before joining Dunchurch.
A bit of a jack of all trades, in fact I have made 6 band recordings all on different instruments, Bass Trombone, Eb Bass, Euphonium, 1st Trombone, Percussion and Musical Director !!!!
Contest wise it's a toss up between playing number 1 with Rolls Royce at the Royal Albert Hall in the second section, winning the second section with Bedworth playing Bass Trombone & Tuned Percussion (yes, other bands appealed against the result but it was rejected), or finishing 3rd in the National Finals in London.
Concert wise is easier, when I took over at Dunchurch I went to the Village Hall for the first concert to set out the hall, I was allocated 'chairs' with Phil Stanley, we set out about 90, 2/3 of the way down the hall, Phil said that will do, we won’t fill these, I didn’t believe him but sure enough he was right. After some deliberations I went to the committee with a Last Night Of The Proms idea, there were some reservations but agreed to proceed. The hall only has 160 chairs but we printed 200 tickets and agreed a contingency plan of band rehearsal chairs if required. We sold about 80 tickets in advance, on the day at 7.00pm the hall looked to be filling nicely, at 7.20 my panic stricken dad came rushing to the Band assembly area, we had run out of chairs, off go various band members in cars to the band room to collect chairs, we announced there would be a 30 minute delay and we ended up with over 200 people, The concert was a rip-roaring success!!
The most challenging was being given 3 weeks to learn both Trombone and bass clef from scratch for Bedworth Bands 1st recording, check the Bass Trombone parts every single note in all the pieces has every single slide position written on them.
